Eye care tips play a significant role in the protection of the eyes and if not considered, it may result in vision dimness or loss. Below are essential eye protection tips:

  • If you face sun or other rays, computer or other screens for long, chemicals, metal particles or other similar things, wear appropriate glasses.
  • Adjust the brightness of your devices to a comfortable level so that it does not hamper your eyes.
  • Avoid reading/studying or usage of electronic devices screens i.e. mobile phone, computer etc. for long time; and rest your eyes by using “20-20-20” principle (after each 20 minutes of reading or using screens, relax your eyes for at least 20 seconds by looking at distance around 20 feet).
  • Eat foods, vegetables and fruits that contain Vitamin A, E and C like milk and dairy, egg, fish, liver, sunflower oil, carrot, pumpkin, potato, maize, lemon, green vegetables, fresh and dry fruits i.e. orange, kiwi, strawberry, date, mango, almond etc.
  • Do not rub your eyes with uncleaned fingers or towels.
  • Avoid contact/touch or hand shake with a person having eye infection symptoms i.e. redness, discharges, watering etc. Also, avoid using towels or materials used by the person.
  • Take your child to eye specialist for check up at the age of 3-4 months and 2-3 years.
  • If you have Diabetes or High Blood Pressure, try to keep it controlled and visit eye specialist for check-up at least in 6 months.
  • If you have vision dimness due to Refractive Error, get your vision checked at least after 6 months.

Eye movement is controlled by 6 muscles attached to the outermost layer of the eyeball called the Sclera. Abnormal length, functionality, or neurologic control of these muscles causes deviation of the eyeball called Strabismus or Squint. This deviation can result in vision and beauty issues. One of the eyes will look ahead while another may turn in, out, up, or down. This deviation might be permanent or may come and go (transient). The permanent deviation is called tropia while the temporary deviation is called phoria. Squint is usually associated with vision dimness in one or both eyes. It needs proper treatment. Otherwise, it will create other problems in addition to beauty issues, i.e. Lazy Eye, vision loss, or double vision.

Types: Considering the abnormal deviation of the eye, there are four types of tropia:

  1. Esotropia (inward turn)
  2. Exotropia (outward turn)
  3. Hypertropia (upward turn)
  4. Hypotropia (downward turn)

 
Below are the four types of phoria (temporary deviation):

  1. Exophoria
  2. Exophoria
  3. Hyperphoria
  4. Hypophoria

Causes: Strabismus could be congenital or acquired. Refractive error, vision loss, paralysis of nerves, strokes, and Glaucoma could cause strabismus.

Treatment: The purpose of the treatment is the correction of deviation of the eyeball and to maintain or improve vision. Treatment differs considering the cause of the disease. Usually, glasses are advised at childhood age. Causative treatment is also important. The last option is surgery to correct the deviation.

Blepharospasm is a rare neurologic disorder in which the person experiences uncontrolled abnormal blinking or eyelid movement (i.e. twitching). It is mainly seen in mid-age or old age women, however, it is also reported in children as a result of another eye disease. It usually starts with one side but affects both sides after some time. It may become progressively harder for affected individuals to keep their eyes open.

Types: There are two types of Blepharospasm:

  1. Eyelid twitching
  2. Benign Essential Blepharospasm

Eyelid twitching usually goes away on its own. But people with Benign Essential Blepharospasm can develop severe and chronic (long-term) eyelid twitching. The commonest type is Benign Essential Blepharospasm in which the eyelids blink frequently and involuntarily. The reason behind Blepharospasm is not known, however, stresses, drugs, Vitamin B12 deficiency, and some other diseases could be involved.
Treatment: If eyelids keep twitching for more than a few weeks the person needs to go to the eye doctor.  Firstly, the underlying reason should be identified and treated. If it still exists, Vitamin therapy, Botox injection, or consultation with Neurosurgeon are the other essential treatment options.

Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the intraocular pressure is often high and can cause vision loss and blindness by damaging the nerve in the back of the eye called Optic nerve.

Prevalence: Glaucoma can be found at any age while it is more common in persons over 50 years of age. The risk of glaucoma increases as we get older and the majority of a specific type of glaucoma called open-angle glaucoma is age-related. That is why doctors recommend bi-annual or at least annual eye checkups for people above 50 years of age. People with a family history of Glaucoma and diabetes are at higher risk. Primary congenital glaucoma is the most common hereditary childhood glaucoma and an important cause of childhood blindness.

 

Signs and Symptoms:  Sign and Symptoms vary based on the type of the disease. Glaucoma symptoms, i.e. vision loss, may start slowly and the affected person may not notice them. With the progress of the disease, the vision is severely lost and if it is not treated, it will result in blindness. Unfortunately, vision loss due to Glaucoma could not be restored or treated. Only the progress of the disease could be prevented. Other signs and symptoms i.e. pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, and eye redness may occur rapidly in acute types.
Diagnosis: Glaucoma can be diagnosed by a comprehensive dilated eye exam, Intra-ocular pressure check, and other specific eye examinations.
Treatment: In the first stages, the use of local drops and oral drugs may be effective. If not, Laser treatment (SLT) or Surgical procedures i.e. Trabeculectomy will be done. The purpose of the surgical procedure is to make way for the drainage of the intraocular fluid. This procedure is 80-90% effective.

With the increase of age to around 40 years, the Lens of the eye loses its normal elasticity and cannot adapt to focus on near objects. Normally, the Lens convexity increases to focus on near objects which is called Accommodation. The accommodation weakens as the age reaches around 40 years and the person cannot see near objects. This is called Presbyopia which is one of the common problems of the eye. Presbyopia occurs in almost all people, except in those with distant vision dimness having a minus number (near-sighted persons). They may develop low-level Presbyopia or may not develop Presbyopia at all. Persons with distant vision dimness having a plus number (far-sighted persons) could develop Presbyopia earlier than other people. Signs and Symptoms: The person will face problems seeing near objects or reading. Other symptoms are eye tiredness, headache, dizziness when reading or working on the computer, and needing more light while reading. Thus the affected eye weakens irreversibly and cannot see even with glasses. This weakness is called Lazy Eye or Amblyopia. Lazy Eye is usual in one eye but it could be seen in both eyes as well.

Causes: The vision center in the brain develops from gestational life to around 10 years of age, however, the most significant development is till 3 years of age. If the child’s vision problem is diagnosed and treated until 5 years of age, the vision could be restored even if Amblyopia has occurred. As much as the treatment is delayed after 5 years of age, the outcome of the chances of the effectiveness of the treatment reduces. The hope for the effectiveness of the treatment and restoring vision reduces or finishes after 7-10 years of age or above.

Eye weakness differs from Lazy Eye. A lazy Eye occurs as a result of a weak eye if left untreated. Lazy Eye is the laziness of the vision center in the brain which is curable if treated timely. If it is not treated, it will cause permanent vision loss or blindness which will not be treatable and could not be corrected with glasses. Some other diseases that cause vision loss i.e. cataracts, squints, etc. can also cause Lazy Eye.

Signs and Symptoms: Lazy Eye usually occurs at 6 years of age and is noticed by the parents. Sometimes it could not be noticed by the parents. At the age when a child cannot understand his/her vision loss, he/she may complain of headaches or dizziness. But in the majority of the cases, the child does not have any symptoms. Sometimes Amblyopia could be diagnosed as a result of assessing another eye disease i.e. cataract, squint, etc. that causes Lazy Eye. Unilateral Amblyopia is usually difficult to diagnose because the healthy eye compensates for the unhealthy eye and the child does not feel vision loss of one eye. When both eyes are Lazy, the child may try to make himself/herself closer to objects i.e. to TV, board, book, etc. This is a sign of vision dimness to which parents should pay attention.

Treatment: Fortunately, Lazy Eye is curable if diagnosed and treated timely. Eyeglasses, Causative treatment, and Patching are important treatment measures.

Tear Duct called Naso-Lacrimal duct is a channel that drains tears from the eye surface to the nose. The obstruction of this duct causes the tear not to drain in the normal way but stay in the eye or come out as tears. This is called Naso-Lacrimal Duct Obstruction (NLDO). It is usually associated with infection, discharges, and inflammation.

Naso-Lacrimal Duct sometimes does not develop properly in gestational life and the newborn baby’s eye starts tearing and discharges from the first day of age. NLDO is common in newborn babies and 6 – 20 percent of newborn babies have NLDO.

Signs and Symptoms: Excess tearing, yellow or white eye discharges, eye redness, swelling, and pain are the common signs and symptoms and are usually present since the first day of age.

Causes: NLDO is usually congenital. Since this duct is so narrow, blockage happens and the tear does not drain to the nose. Sometimes it could have other causes as well.

Treatment: The first treatment is advising local antibiotics to control infection. Massaging is also significant. If the obstruction is not opened till 6 months of age, “Probing” is done for the child. Probing could be done from 6 months of age to 18 months. If the obstruction persists, the final option is DCR surgery which is advised in adult age.

Retina is the internal light-sensitive nerve tissue layer of the eyeball. Retina converts light into nerve messages and sends them to the brain. Therefore, the retina plays a key role in the visual process. The retina receives most of its oxygen and nutrients from the vascular layer called the choroid, which surrounds the outer surface of the retina. The Retina is made of two layers:
  1. Sensory Retina (SR)
  2. Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE)
SR is the inner surface of the retina and RPE is the outer surface of the retina. When Sensory Retina is separated from RPE due to certain reasons, it is called Retinal Detachment (RD). Retinal detachment factors: Various factors increase the risk of retinal detachment. The most important of these factors are: • age increasing • Severe myopia • Diabetes • Inheritance • Severe trauma to the head, face, or eyes • Disease, inflammation, or intraocular tumor. Symptoms: • See sparks of light in the field of view • Seeing floating objects in front of the eyes • Image deformation and distortion • Feeling of a veil or shadow in front of the eyes • Sudden vision loss Treatment: The only effective treatment for retinal detachment is surgery. Retinal detachment does not improve spontaneously or with the recommendation of medication and surgery should be performed as soon as possible.
